This seminar will address how couples and marriage counseling can harm a victim of relational abuse when the mental health provider attempts relational counseling while domestic violence has occurred or is occurring. Material presented will be based on facilitator’s 18 years of Private Practice work with adult victims of relational abuse, a review of literature, and consultations with local Mental Health providers in Private Practice.
Attendees will learn how to minimize the potential harm to themselves and to victims by assessing for domestic violence prior to conducting couples counseling. If relational abuse is a pattern in the present or the past, attendees will be given a Safety Protocol to use in their Private Practice setting which presents similar yet different challenges from agencies/non-profits so their awareness of potential danger is heightened and safety measures are established.
