Continuing Medical Education (CME)
  • Live One-Time Activities
  • These are CME activities that physicians must attend (in person or virtually), such as national conferences, live Internet webinars, local workshops, seminars, or departmental scientific meetings. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

    Are you interested in planning an activity?

    Please contact South Piedmont AHEC's Continuing Medical Education Director at least 4 months in advance for either a directly sponsored or jointly provided activity. Please note the ACCME standards are rigorous regarding academic need and measurable outcomes. A submitted application does not guarantee credit. All activities must demonstrate an impact on physician competence, physician performance, and/or patient outcomes. The CME team will guide you through the application and planning process to ensure that ACCME expectations are met and to see if your proposed activity qualifies for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Please contact us before submitting an application.

  • Enduring Materials
  • An enduring material is a non-live CME activity that "endures" over time. Enduring materials include printed, recorded, audio, video, and online/electronic activities. There are special communication requirements for enduring materials because of the nature of the activities. Because there is no direct interaction between the provider and/or faculty and the learner, the provider must communicate the following information to participants so that they are aware of this information prior to starting the educational activity:

    • Principle faculty and their credentials;
    • Medium or combination of media used;
    • Method of physician participation in the learning process;
    • Estimated time to complete the educational activity (same as number of designated credit hours);
    • Dates of original release and most recent review or update; and
    • Termination date (date after which enduring material is no longer certified for credit).

  • Regularly Scheduled Series (RSS)
  • A Regularly Schedule Series is a planned activity occurring on an ongoing basis; it can be daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly. It is primarily planned and presented to the accredited provider's professional staff. Examples of RSSs include medical grand rounds, tumor boards, case conferences, M&M Conferences, etc.

    Are you interested in planning a Regularly Scheduled Series?

    Please contact South Piedmont AHEC's Continuing Medical Education Director. Our RSS applications run on a calendar year but you can apply mid-year with a prorated application fee. Please note the ACCME standards are rigorous regarding academic need and measurable outcomes. A submitted application does not guarantee credit. All activities must demonstrate an impact on physician competence, physician performance, and/or patient outcomes. • MOC Part IV/ PI-CME
  • Your MOC Part IV Quality Improvement project fulfills all the criteria for a Performance Improvement-CME project. Please contact South Piedmont AHEC's Continuing Medical Education Director for the specific forms needed to complete this activity

    Performance improvement activities, or PI-CME projects, are based on a learner's participation in a project established and/or guided by a provider in which a physician identifies an educational need through a measure of their performance in practice, engages in educational experiences to meet the need, integrates learning into patient care and then re-evaluates their own performance. PI-CME is structured in 3 stages:

    • Stage A: Access current practice using identified performance measures
    • Stage B: Implement based on performance measures from Stage A, using suitable tracking tools. Physicians receive guidance on parameters for applying and assessing performance change
    • Stage C: Re-evaluate & reflect on Stage B by comparing the assessment done in Stage A. Summarize any practice, process and/or outcome changes that resulted from conducting the PI activity
    • 5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ are awarded for completing each Stage A, B, C. Once Stages A-C are completed within a year's time, physicians will receive an additional 5 credits, for a max of 20 credits.
