**Your annual OSHA-training does not meet the state requirement for SPICE infection control training. The NC statute clearly states that at least 1 person in every dental office must complete the state-approved course addressing the following:
SPICE is the Statewide Program for Infection Control and Epidemiology. Section 10A, NC Administrative Code 41A.0206 specifies that each health care organization (including dental offices) shall designate one on-site staff member to direct infection control activities. The designated person is required to complete a course approved by the state in infection control. The course includes the following specific topics: 1) Epidemiologic principles of infectious disease, 2) Principles and practice of asepsis/hand washing, 3) Sterilization, disinfection and sanitation, 4) Universal blood and body fluid precautions, 5) Safe injection practices, 6) Engineering controls to reduce the risk of sharps injuries, 7) Disposal of sharps, and 8) Techniques that reduce the risk of sharp injuries to health care workers. The rule in its entirety can be viewed at: http://www.unc.edu/depts/spice/New0206Rule-Jan2010.html.
